Enter your room and your sofa, bed or dining table, and the calculator picks the standard rug size that suits them, drawn to scale.
Standard sizes: 120 × 170, 140 × 200, 160 × 230, 200 × 290, 240 × 340 and 300 × 400 cm, or 4 × 6, 5 × 8, 6 × 9, 8 × 10, 9 × 12 and 10 × 14 ft. The calculator needs JavaScript to run; the rug sizing guide covers the same ground.
An 8 × 11 ft (240 × 340 cm) rug is the usual minimum, placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it shows about 45 cm (18 in) on each side and at the foot. A 10 × 13 ft (300 × 400 cm) rug gives a generous border all round and also goes under the bedside tables.
A 6.5 × 9.5 ft (200 × 290 cm) rug works well laid across the lower two-thirds of the bed. For a wider border and a soft step on both sides, go up to 8 × 11 ft (240 × 340 cm). Smaller than 5 × 8 ft only fits as runners on each side.
Size the rug to the seating, not the room. In a small living room use 5 × 7.5 ft (160 × 230 cm), in an average one 6.5 × 9.5 ft (200 × 290 cm), and in a large one 8 × 11 ft (240 × 340 cm). At least the front legs of the sofa and chairs should be on the rug, with 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 in) of bare floor around it.
Measure the whole footprint of the sectional, long side and return. Most sectionals need 8 × 11 ft (240 × 340 cm) or larger. The rug should reach past both arms of the L, with the corner of the sectional sitting near the inner corner of the rug.
Add at least 60 cm (24 in) on every side of the table, so the chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. A table for four (about 120 × 80 cm) suits 6.5 × 9.5 ft (200 × 290 cm). A table for six (about 160 × 90 cm) suits 8 × 11 ft (240 × 340 cm). A round table suits a round rug.
Start with the sofa. For a straight sofa, the rug should reach at least 20 cm (8 in) past each side, with at least the front legs on it. A larger rug that takes all the legs gives about 30 cm (12 in) past each side and tends to read as one seating area.
Enter the long side, the seat depth and the return, which is the shorter arm. The rug is sized to the whole footprint, not just the long side: 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 in) past each end of the long side, and the depth plus the return plus 20 to 40 cm (8 to 16 in) the other way. For a U-shaped or modular sectional, the guide to choosing a rug size for a sectional sofa gives starting sizes.
Measure the table, then allow for the chairs. The rug should extend at least 60 cm (24 in) past each side of the table so the chair legs stay on it when someone pulls out to sit down. 75 cm (30 in) leaves more margin. For a round table, enter its diameter as both the width and the depth.
