What Size Rug Do You Need Under a Bed?
How to choose and position a rug under your bed

A rug under your bed can make a bedroom feel warmer and more finished, while giving you a soft surface to step onto in the morning.
The right size depends on your bed, bedside tables and available floor space. You don't necessarily need one huge rug covering the entire room.
Queen and King Bed Rug Sizes
For a larger rug under the bed, these are useful starting points:
- Queen bed: A 200 × 300 cm (6.5 × 10 ft) rug can work well, particularly when positioned horizontally beneath the bed.
- King bed: A 240 × 340 cm (8 × 11 ft) or larger rug provides more generous coverage around the sides and foot.
These are starting points rather than fixed rules. Check the actual dimensions of your bed and room before choosing a rug.
The rug should extend beyond the sides of the bed enough to create a visible border and provide a comfortable landing area when you get out of bed.
How Far Should the Rug Extend?
A common arrangement is to position the rug beneath the lower two-thirds of the bed, allowing it to extend beyond both sides and the foot.
You can also use a larger rug that extends beneath the bedside tables and further into the room.
If a full-size rug doesn't work with your room or budget, two matching runners placed along the sides of the bed can be a practical alternative.
Don't Forget Doors
Check nearby bedroom and wardrobe doors before buying a thick rug.
A rug beneath a door's swing can prevent it from opening properly, particularly with thicker or high-pile rugs.
Pro tip
Use painter's tape to mark the proposed rug dimensions on your bedroom floor. Position the bed over the outline and check how much rug remains visible around it.
