Bedding Sizes by Bed Size: A Guide to US and European Dimensions
Mattress, duvet and sheet sizes explained

Buying bedding can be surprisingly confusing because bed and bedding sizes aren't standardized worldwide.
A "Queen" or "King" in the US does not necessarily have the same dimensions as a similarly named bed in Europe. Even within Europe, mattress and bedding dimensions can vary between countries and manufacturers.
Always check the actual dimensions of your mattress and the manufacturer's sizing chart before buying.
Common US Mattress Sizes
| US bed size |
Mattress size |
| Twin |
97 × 191 cm (38 × 75 in) |
| Full / Double |
137 × 191 cm (54 × 75 in) |
| Queen |
152 × 203 cm (60 × 80 in) |
| King |
193 × 203 cm (76 × 80 in) |
| California King |
183 × 213 cm (72 × 84 in) |
These are standard US mattress dimensions. Bedding dimensions themselves vary by manufacturer.
European Bed Sizes
European mattresses are commonly sold in widths such as:
- 90 cm
- 120 cm
- 140 cm
- 160 cm
- 180 cm
- 200 cm
Common lengths include 200 cm, although other lengths are available.
For example, a 160 × 200 cm mattress is a common European double-bed size, but it is not the same physical size as a US Queen.
This is why it's better to buy sheets and duvets based on the actual mattress dimensions, rather than assuming that a US and European bed with a similar name will use the same bedding.
Check Your Mattress Depth
Fitted sheets also need to accommodate the full mattress depth.
Measure:
Mattress thickness + topper thickness
Then check the fitted sheet's maximum mattress depth before buying.
A sheet that is too shallow can pull off the corners, while an excessively deep sheet may fit loosely.
Don't Forget Duvet Size
Duvet sizing is even less standardized than mattress sizing.
The ideal duvet depends on:
- Mattress width
- Mattress thickness
- How much overhang you want
- Whether you share the bed
- Local bedding conventions
Check the manufacturer's finished duvet dimensions rather than relying only on labels such as "Queen" or "King."
Pro tip
If you're shopping internationally, write down your mattress dimensions in centimetres and inches before shopping. Then compare those measurements directly with the product specifications.
That will save you from relying on potentially confusing size names.
