Should All Furniture Legs Be On the Rug?
How to position sofas, chairs, beds and tables on an area rug

No. You don't need every furniture leg to sit on an area rug.
The right arrangement depends on the room, the size of your rug and the furniture you're trying to connect. In living rooms, having just the front legs on the rug is often the easiest way to anchor a seating area without needing an oversized rug.
3 Ways to Place Furniture on a Rug
1. Front Legs On — The Most Versatile Option
Place the front legs of your sofa and chairs on the rug, with the back legs remaining on the floor.
This works particularly well in living rooms because it visually connects the seating while allowing you to use a smaller rug.
It's a good option when putting the entire seating arrangement on the rug would require a much larger size.
2. All Legs On — The Larger, More Unified Look
With a sufficiently large rug, you can place the entire seating arrangement on the rug.
This creates a more unified zone and works particularly well in larger rooms or open-plan spaces.
Make sure there is enough rug around the furniture so that the pieces don't sit right on the edges.
3. All Legs Off — The Smaller-Rug Option
You can also keep all furniture off the rug, with the rug sitting underneath the coffee table or in the centre of the seating area.
This can work in smaller spaces, but be careful with very small rugs. If the rug looks like an isolated "island" underneath the coffee table, it can make the seating arrangement feel disconnected.
What About Different Rooms?
Living room: Front legs on the rug is a reliable starting point. Larger rooms can often accommodate the entire seating arrangement.
Dining room: The rug should be large enough for the table and chairs when the chairs are pulled out. As a starting point, allow around 60 cm (24 in) beyond the table on each side.
Bedroom: A large rug can extend beneath the bed and bedside tables, or you can position a smaller rug beneath the lower part of the bed. The best option depends on the room and bed size.
Do All Furniture Pieces Need to Match?
No. Your sofa might have its front legs on the rug while a nearby side table sits completely off it.
The important thing is that the main furniture arrangement feels connected and intentional.
You also don't need to put a media console on the rug simply because the sofa is. Fixed furniture against a wall can remain on the bare floor if that works better for the room.
Watch Out for Uneven Furniture
If some furniture legs sit on a thick rug while others sit directly on hard flooring, check that the furniture remains stable.
This can be particularly noticeable with dining chairs and tables.
The Easiest Way to Check
Not sure which arrangement will work with your rug?
Use painter's tape to mark the rug dimensions on your floor and position your furniture around it.
Or build the room to scale in Nooked, add your furniture and rug, and move everything into position. You can see whether the rug connects the furniture and whether you've left enough clearance around the room.
