How to Choose a Rug Size for a Sectional Sofa
How to size and position a rug with an L-shaped or U-shaped sofa

Sectional sofas are great for creating a comfortable, defined seating area—but their L- or U-shaped footprint can make choosing a rug more complicated.
The key is to size the rug around the whole seating arrangement, not just the longest side of the sofa.
Start With Your Sectional's Full Footprint
Measure the maximum length and depth of your sectional.
Then consider how you want the rug to interact with it.
For most living rooms, a good starting point is to have at least the front legs of the sectional sitting on the rug. The rug should visually connect the sofa and coffee table rather than appearing as a small rectangle floating underneath the centre.
For a larger room, you may prefer a rug large enough for the entire sectional to sit on.
Common Starting Sizes
These are useful starting points, not fixed rules:
- Smaller sectional: 200 × 300 cm (6.5 × 10 ft)
- Large L-shaped sectional: 240 × 340 cm (8 × 11 ft)
- Large U-shaped or modular sectional: 270 × 360 cm (9 × 12 ft) or larger
Always compare the actual rug dimensions with your sectional before buying.
What About the Chaise?
The chaise can make an otherwise suitable rug feel too small.
Check that the rug extends far enough beneath the chaise to create a deliberate connection with the rest of the seating area. You don't necessarily need the entire chaise on the rug—the important thing is that the rug doesn't look like it stops awkwardly halfway through the seating arrangement.
Common Mistakes
Sizing the rug from the sofa's longest side: An L-shaped sofa has two dimensions. Make sure the rug works with the entire footprint.
Choosing a rug that's only big enough for the coffee table: This can make the sectional feel disconnected from the rug.
Ignoring walkways: A large sectional already takes up significant floor space. Make sure the rug doesn't reduce the main circulation routes too much.
Pro tip
Mark the proposed rug dimensions on your floor with painter's tape before ordering. Position the sectional inside the outline and walk around it to see whether the size actually works.
