How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Your Living Room
How to choose the right rug size for your furniture and room

Choosing a living-room rug isn't just about finding a rectangle that fits on the floor. The rug should help connect your seating arrangement while leaving enough space for comfortable movement around the room.
The best size depends on your sofa, chairs, coffee table and room layout.
Start With Your Seating
For most living rooms, placing the front legs of the sofa and main chairs on the rug is a reliable starting point.
If your room is large enough, you can choose a larger rug that accommodates the entire seating arrangement.
What you generally want to avoid is a tiny rug sitting underneath only the coffee table while the sofa and chairs sit completely outside it. This can make the seating area feel disconnected.

Leave Room for Movement
A rug can technically fit beneath your furniture and still make the room uncomfortable.
Check the space between:
- Sofa and coffee table
- Furniture and walls
- Seating and doorways
- Furniture and the main walking routes
Also check nearby doors. A thick rug can interfere with a door if it sits directly beneath its swing.
Should the Rug Touch the TV Console?
Not necessarily.
A media console can sit completely on the bare floor while the rug anchors the seating area in front of it. What matters is that the overall arrangement looks intentional and leaves enough space for movement.
Pro tip
Use painter's tape to mark the dimensions of your proposed rug on the floor. Place your furniture around it and walk through the room before committing to a size.
