Most sofas run 160 cm to 240 cm wide and 85 cm to 100 cm deep. A corner or L-shaped sofa runs larger again, typically 240–300 cm along its longest run.
A sofa wants 30 cm to 45 cm to the coffee table: closer and you cannot get past to sit down, further and you cannot reach your cup without standing. That gap, plus the depth of the table itself, is what decides whether a sofa leaves a workable living room behind it.
