Standard Dresser Dimensions: Will It Fit Your Room?
The usual dresser and chest sizes, the space to open the drawers and a quick way to try one in your room.
A standard 6-drawer dresser is typically 60 × 18 × 32 in (152 × 46 × 81 cm), with most between 54 and 66 in (137 to 168 cm) wide. Leave 24 in (60 cm) in front so a drawer can be pulled out and you can stand at it. 18 in (45 cm) is the least that works.
Dresser Sizes
- 6-drawer (double) dresser: 54 to 66 in (137 to 168 cm) wide, 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) high. The one most people mean.
- Tall chest, 5 drawers: 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) wide, 46 to 54 in (117 to 137 cm) high. Narrower, and goes higher instead of wider.
- 3-drawer chest: 30 to 40 in (76 to 102 cm) wide, 30 to 34 in (76 to 86 cm) high. Small enough for a nursery or a corner.
- Depth: 16 to 22 in (41 to 56 cm) for most. A deep dresser is at the top of that range.
Space You Need Around It
A dresser is a piece you open every day, and an open drawer reaches about as far as the dresser is deep.
- In front, comfortable: 24 in (60 cm). Room for the drawer and for you to stand and reach it.
- In front, tight: 18 in (45 cm). The drawer comes out, but you stand to one side.
- At the foot of a bed: if the dresser faces the bed, keep 24 in (60 cm) at least between them so the drawers open and people can pass.
- Room depth, a 60 in dresser on a wall: about 42 in (107 cm) with 24 in (60 cm) in front.
Where It Fits
A 6-drawer dresser takes a wall of about 5 ft (1.5 m). In a small bedroom, a tall chest uses wall height rather than width and leaves more floor.
A dresser with a TV or a mirror on top is taller. Check the ceiling, and check any window or radiator behind it.
Where These Sizes Come From
These are typical ranges, not one product. Sizes are not standardised and vary by maker, so check the listing for the exact piece. Top overhangs, handles and trim can add an inch or two.
