Standard Dining Table Dimensions: Will It Fit Your Room?
What a table for four, six or eight measures, the room it needs and a quick way to try one in your room.
A standard 6-seat dining table is typically 72 × 36 × 30 in (183 × 91 × 76 cm). Leave 30 in (76 cm) between the table and the wall on each side where someone sits, and at least 24 in (60 cm). That puts a 72 × 36 in table in a room about 132 × 96 in (335 × 244 cm).
Dining table Sizes
- Seats 4: 42 to 48 in (107 to 122 cm) × 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm). Or a round table 36 to 48 in (91 to 122 cm) across.
- Seats 6: 60 to 72 in (152 to 183 cm) × 36 in (91 cm). Or a round table 48 to 60 in (122 to 152 cm) across.
- Seats 8: 80 to 96 in (203 to 244 cm) × 38 to 42 in (97 to 107 cm). It takes a room 13 ft (4 m) long or more.
- Height: 29 to 30 in (74 to 76 cm). The standard, with a seat about 18 in (46 cm) high.
Space You Need Around It
The table is only part of it. Chairs pull out, and people sit in them, so the gap around the table sets the room size.
- Table to the nearest wall, comfortable: 30 in (76 cm). The chair comes out and someone sits and gets up.
- Tight: 24 in (60 cm). A chair can still come out, but it is a squeeze.
- With a walkway behind the chairs: about 36 in (91 cm). So people can pass while someone is seated.
- Room for a 72 × 36 in table: about 132 × 96 in (335 × 244 cm) with 30 in (76 cm) on every side. With 24 in (60 cm) it is 120 × 84 in (305 × 213 cm).
Where It Fits
A table for four suits a room of about 9 × 8 ft (2.7 × 2.4 m) at the least, and a table for six wants about 11 × 8 ft (3.4 × 2.4 m) of clear floor. If the table is against a wall on one side, that side needs no chair space.
A round table is easier in a small room, because there are no corners to catch. A table with a pedestal seats more people in the same size than one with a leg at each corner. See dining table clearance.
Where These Sizes Come From
These are typical ranges, not one product. Sizes are not standardised and vary by maker, so check the listing for the exact piece. Top overhangs, handles and trim can add an inch or two.
