How Many People Fit at My Table?
Seats for every table size, how much room the chairs need, and where the extra table goes when the whole family comes.
Allow 24 in (60 cm) of table edge per person. A 72 × 36 in (183 × 91 cm) table seats six, and an 8-seat table is about 87 × 37 in (220 × 95 cm). With a chair at each end it seats ten at a squeeze. Leave 30 in (76 cm) behind every chair so people can sit down and get up.
Seats for Each Table Size
Each person needs about 24 in (60 cm) of table edge, 30 in (76 cm) to be comfortable. Corners and table legs take some of that, so these are the counts that work in practice.
- Rectangular, 48 in (122 cm): 4.
- Rectangular, 60 in (152 cm): 4, or 6 with one at each end.
- Rectangular, 72 in (183 cm): 6, or 8 with one at each end.
- Rectangular, 87 to 96 in (220 to 244 cm): 8, or 10 with one at each end.
- Rectangular, 108 to 120 in (274 to 305 cm): 10 to 12.
- Round, 48 in (122 cm): 4 to 6. 60 in (152 cm): 6 to 8. 72 in (183 cm): 8 to 10.
- Folding table, 6 ft (183 × 76 cm): 6, or 8 with one at each end. 8 ft (244 × 76 cm): 8 to 10.
Space Around the Table
The table is the easy part. The chairs pull out and people sit in them, so the room behind each chair decides whether everyone fits.
- Behind each chair, comfortable: 30 in (76 cm). Room to pull the chair out, sit down and get up.
- The least: 24 in (60 cm). It works, but nobody gets past a seated guest.
- Where people walk behind the chairs: about 36 in (91 cm). Most of all on the side toward the kitchen, where the host walks all evening.
- Room for an 8-seat table of 87 × 37 in: about 12 × 8 ft (370 × 245 cm) with 30 in (76 cm) on every side.
Where the Extra Guests Go
Most Thanksgivings are bigger than the table: hosts expected about nine guests on average in 2025, and the usual dining table seats six.
- Add a folding table to the end of yours. One long table in a straight line, under one tablecloth, often reaches into the next room through a wide doorway. Most dining tables and folding tables are both about 29 to 30 in (74 to 76 cm) high.
- Put the leaves in. Each leaf, usually 12 to 18 in (30 to 46 cm), adds about one seat on each long side.
- Use a bench on one side. Without chair legs and arms to space round, it fits more people along the same edge.
- Make room in the living room. Moving the coffee table out often leaves space for a second table for the children.
- Keep the way to the kitchen clear. Plan the table so that side has the 36 in (91 cm) walkway, not the 24 in squeeze.
Where These Numbers Come From
The 24 in (60 cm) per person and the space behind the chairs are the same figures as our dining table clearance and standard dining table pages. The seat counts are typical ranges that furniture makers and event rental companies quote, checked in October 2026; chairs with arms need more. The guest numbers are from Butterball's 2025 Thanksgiving survey.
