Black Friday Furniture: Will It Fit?
The deal ends at midnight. The return fee does not. Check the sofa fits your room and your door before you buy.
Before you buy a Black Friday sofa, bed or table, check three things: the space in the room, including walkways of at least 24 in (60 cm), the way in, every door, hall and stair it has to pass, and the return policy, because furniture returns often carry a restocking fee of 10 to 30%. Before You Buy: The Checklist
- Measure the spot, not just the room. A sofa needs about 18 in (45 cm) to the coffee table and a walkway of at least 24 in (60 cm) past it. A bed needs room to walk round it and open the drawers.
- Measure the way in. The front door, the hall, every turn and the stairs. Compare the narrowest opening with the piece's smallest side, usually its depth or height, and leave about 2 in (5 cm) to spare. See furniture doorway clearance.
- Check the box as well as the piece. Boxed and flat-pack furniture lists a package size, and a long box has to make the same turns.
- Read the return policy before you pay. Many furniture shops charge a restocking fee, often 10 to 30%, plus the cost of collecting it, and some sale items cannot be returned at all.
- Check the delivery date. Large furniture can take weeks to arrive. If it has to be in place for the holidays, check before you buy, not after.
- Compare like with like. Two sofas with the same name in different sizes are not the same deal. Put them side by side at real size.
The Deals That Most Often Do Not Fit
- Deep sofas. A standard sofa is 35 to 40 in (89 to 102 cm) deep; a deep-seat one can be 45 in (114 cm) or more, and that comes out of the walkway in front of it. See standard sofa size.
- Sectionals. The chaise or corner side is the one that runs into the door, the radiator or the coffee table. See sectional sofa size.
- Bigger beds. A king is 76 in (193 cm) wide before the frame, and the nightstands on each side need room too. See king bed size.
- Dining tables. Each chair needs 30 in (76 cm) behind it, so the room has to be about 5 ft (150 cm) longer and wider than the table. See dining table clearance.
How Big Are Black Friday Furniture Discounts?
Real, but not huge. In 2025, furniture bought online on Black Friday was on average about 19% off, the deepest discount of the season, according to Adobe Analytics. Americans spent $31.1 billion on furniture online in November and December.
That is why checking first matters: a 15% restocking fee on a return takes most of a 19% saving.
Where These Numbers Come From
Discounts and spending are from Adobe Analytics' reports on the 2025 holiday season. Restocking fees are from furniture shops' published return policies, checked in October 2026; they change, so read the policy of the shop you buy from.
