King Bed Dimensions: Will It Fit Your Room?
The real king bed size, the space it needs around it and a quick way to try it in your room.
A king mattress is 76 × 80 in (193 × 203 cm). Add 24 in (60 cm) on each side you get in from and the room needs to be about 124 in (315 cm) wide. With one side against a wall it needs about 100 in (254 cm).
King Bed Size
- Mattress: 76 × 80 in (193 × 203 cm). This is the standard US size, the same at every shop.
- The frame is bigger than the mattress. A frame often adds a few inches to each side and the foot, and a headboard or footboard adds more to the length. Check the listing for the frame's own size.
- A king is as wide as two Twin XL mattresses side by side, which is why split kings and adjustable bases are sold in pairs of Twin XL.
Space You Need Around a King Bed
Nooked checks the same gaps this table uses: 24 in (60 cm) is comfortable on each side you get in from, and 18 in (45 cm) is the least that works. Widths below use the mattress size, so add the frame's extra when you know it.
- Both sides open, comfortable: 124 in (315 cm) wide. 24 in (60 cm) each side.
- Both sides open, tight: 112 in (284 cm) wide. 18 in (45 cm) each side.
- One side against a wall: 100 in (254 cm) wide. Only one person gets in without climbing over the other.
- Length with a walkway at the foot: 104 in (264 cm). 24 in (60 cm) at the foot lets people walk past. A wardrobe in front of the bed needs 24 to 36 in (60 to 90 cm) for its doors.
Where a King Bed Fits
A king suits a large main bedroom. A king needs a room of about 12 × 12 ft (3.7 × 3.7 m) or more to leave space for nightstands and a dresser. In a room under 10 ft (3 m) wide there is little beside the bed, and it can be hard to get a king mattress up the stairs.
The California King is 4 in (10 cm) narrower and 4 in (10 cm) longer. If you are between two sizes, measure the room first and test both.
