Full Bed Dimensions: Will It Fit Your Room?
The real full bed size, the space it needs around it and a quick way to try it in your room.
A full mattress is 54 × 75 in (137 × 191 cm). Add 24 in (60 cm) on each side you get in from and the room needs to be about 102 in (259 cm) wide. With one side against a wall it needs about 78 in (198 cm).
Full Bed Size
- Mattress: 54 × 75 in (137 × 191 cm). This is the standard US size, the same at every shop.
- The frame is bigger than the mattress. A frame often adds a few inches to each side and the foot, and a headboard or footboard adds more to the length. Check the listing for the frame's own size.
- A Full is also called a Double. It is the same length as a Twin, only wider, so a taller sleeper may find it short.
Space You Need Around a Full Bed
Nooked checks the same gaps this table uses: 24 in (60 cm) is comfortable on each side you get in from, and 18 in (45 cm) is the least that works. Widths below use the mattress size, so add the frame's extra when you know it.
- Both sides open, comfortable: 102 in (259 cm) wide. 24 in (60 cm) each side.
- Both sides open, tight: 90 in (229 cm) wide. 18 in (45 cm) each side.
- One side against a wall: 78 in (198 cm) wide. Only one person gets in without climbing over the other.
- Length with a walkway at the foot: 99 in (251 cm). 24 in (60 cm) at the foot lets people walk past. A wardrobe in front of the bed needs 24 to 36 in (60 to 90 cm) for its doors.
Where a Full Bed Fits
A full suits a guest room, a teenager's room or a single adult in a small bedroom. A full is the step up from a twin when one person wants more room, and a small room that cannot take a queen. Two adults can share it, but each gets about the width of a crib mattress, which is why couples usually move up to a queen.
The next size up, the Queen, is 6 in (15 cm) wider and 5 in (13 cm) longer. If you are between two sizes, measure the room first and test both.
