Queen Bed Dimensions: Will It Fit Your Room?
The real queen bed size, the space it needs around it and a quick way to try it in your room.
A queen mattress is 60 × 80 in (152 × 203 cm). Add 24 in (60 cm) on each side you get in from and the room needs to be about 108 in (274 cm) wide. With one side against a wall it needs about 84 in (213 cm).
Queen Bed Size
- Mattress: 60 × 80 in (152 × 203 cm). This is the standard US size, the same at every shop.
- The frame is bigger than the mattress. A frame often adds a few inches to each side and the foot, and a headboard or footboard adds more to the length. Check the listing for the frame's own size.
- For example, an IKEA MALM queen frame is 66 1/8 × 83 1/8 in (168 × 211 cm). That is 6 1/8 in (16 cm) wider and 3 1/8 in (8 cm) longer than the mattress, and its headboard is 39 3/8 in (100 cm) high. Other frames differ, so use the listing's own size. From IKEA's US product page, checked on 22 October 2026.
- A US Queen is not the same as the 160 × 200 cm queen sold in Europe. If you are comparing a shop from another country, use the exact size on the product page.
Space You Need Around a Queen Bed
Nooked checks the same gaps this table uses: 24 in (60 cm) is comfortable on each side you get in from, and 18 in (45 cm) is the least that works. Widths below use the mattress size, so add the frame's extra when you know it.
- Both sides open, comfortable: 108 in (274 cm) wide. 24 in (60 cm) each side.
- Both sides open, tight: 96 in (244 cm) wide. 18 in (45 cm) each side.
- One side against a wall: 84 in (213 cm) wide. Only one person gets in without climbing over the other.
- Length with a walkway at the foot: 104 in (264 cm). 24 in (60 cm) at the foot lets people walk past. A wardrobe in front of the bed needs 24 to 36 in (60 to 90 cm) for its doors.
Where a Queen Bed Fits
A queen suits a main bedroom for one or two people. The queen is the most common adult bed in the US. It suits a main bedroom of about 10 × 10 ft (3 × 3 m) or more, with a nightstand on each side. In a room under 9 ft (2.7 m) wide it leaves little beside the bed.
The next size up, the King, is 16 in (41 cm) wider. If you are between two sizes, measure the room first and test both.
