Standard Sofa Size: Will It Fit Your Room?
What a 2-, 3- and 4-seat sofa measures, the space around it and a quick way to try one in your room.
A standard 3-seat sofa is typically 84 × 38 × 34 in (213 × 97 × 86 cm), with most between 80 and 90 in (203 to 229 cm) wide. Leave 12 to 18 in (30 to 45 cm) to the coffee table and 24 to 28 in (60 to 70 cm) to walk past. With a coffee table and a walkway the room needs to be about 104 in (264 cm) deep in front of the wall.
Standard Sofa Sizes
- 2-seat (loveseat): 58 to 64 in (147 to 163 cm) wide. See loveseat dimensions.
- 3-seat: 80 to 90 in (203 to 229 cm) wide. The standard sofa, and what most people mean by 'a couch'.
- 4-seat or oversized: 92 to 110 in (234 to 279 cm) wide. Needs a wall of 8 ft (2.4 m) or more.
- Depth: 36 to 40 in (91 to 102 cm) for most, and up to 44 in (112 cm) for a deep, lounging sofa.
- Height: 32 to 36 in (81 to 91 cm). The back of the sofa.
Space You Need Around It
The gaps are the same for any sofa. The total below is for a sofa of 38 in (97 cm) deep, with a coffee table 24 in (61 cm) deep.
- In front, to the coffee table: 12 to 18 in (30 to 45 cm). Closer is cramped, and further is hard to reach.
- Walkway past the sofa: 24 to 28 in (60 to 70 cm). Behind it or beside it, wherever people walk.
- Room depth in front of a wall: about 104 in (264 cm). A 38 in (97 cm) sofa, 18 in (45 cm) gap, a 24 in (61 cm) coffee table and 24 in (61 cm) to walk.
- Wall length: at least the sofa's width. Add 18 in (45 cm) beside it if you want a side table.
Where It Fits
A 3-seat sofa suits a living room of about 12 × 14 ft (3.7 × 4.3 m) or more. In a smaller room, a 2.5-seat of 70 to 78 in (178 to 198 cm) leaves more floor, and a loveseat leaves the most.
A good rule of thumb is that the sofa should be about two thirds the length of the wall it stands against, which leaves room for a table at one end.
Getting It Through the Door
Measure the doorways, hallways and any stairs on the way in. A sofa usually goes through a standard door on its end, and legs and arms can often come off. If the route is tight, see will furniture fit through the door.
Where These Sizes Come From
These are typical ranges, not one product. Sofa sizes are not standardised, so check the listing for the exact one. Arms and cushions are part of the width, and a rolled arm can add several inches.
