L-Shaped Sofa Dimensions: Will It Fit Your Room?
The usual size of a sofa with a chaise, the space around it and how to check one against your room.
An L-shaped sofa is typically 85 to 115 in (216 to 292 cm) on the long side, with the chaise reaching 60 to 70 in (152 to 178 cm) out from the wall. The seat is about 36 to 40 in (91 to 102 cm) deep. Leave 12 to 18 in (30 to 45 cm) to the coffee table and 24 to 28 in (60 to 70 cm) to walk past. The one in the button is 100 × 65 × 34 in (254 × 165 × 86 cm).
L-Shaped Sofa Sizes
- Long side: 85 to 115 in (216 to 292 cm). A 3-seat sofa with a chaise on one end.
- Chaise: reaches 60 to 70 in (152 to 178 cm) from the wall. Roughly the length of a person lying down, less a little.
- Seat depth: 36 to 40 in (91 to 102 cm). The same as a standard sofa.
- Left or right? The chaise side is set looking at the sofa from the front. Check which side your room needs before you order, because many can be swapped, and some cannot.
Space You Need Around It
An L-shaped sofa leaves a corner of the floor empty, so it fits a room better than a box of the same overall size would. Nooked's L-shaped sofa is drawn as an L, with the gaps below checked on both sides.
- In front, to the coffee table: 12 to 18 in (30 to 45 cm). Closer is cramped, and further is hard to reach.
- Walkway past the sofa: 24 to 28 in (60 to 70 cm). Behind it or beside it, wherever people walk.
- On the chaise end: 24 to 28 in (60 to 70 cm) beyond the foot of the chaise, so people can still pass.
- Coffee table: a long, narrow one suits the sofa better than a square one. See coffee table spacing.
Where It Fits
An L-shaped sofa suits a living room of about 11 × 13 ft (3.4 × 4 m) or more, and works well where the chaise can fill a corner. In a narrow room it can block the walkway, so check the gap at the chaise end.
If you are choosing between a chaise sofa and a full sectional, the chaise sofa uses less floor and has fewer pieces to fit through a door. See sectional sofa dimensions.
Getting It Through the Door
Measure the doorways, hallways and any stairs on the way in. A sofa usually goes through a standard door on its end, and legs and arms can often come off. If the route is tight, see will furniture fit through the door.
Where These Sizes Come From
These are typical ranges, not one product. Sofa sizes are not standardised, so check the listing for the exact one. Arms and cushions are part of the width, and a rolled arm can add several inches.
