Standard Desk Dimensions: Will It Fit Your Room?
The usual desk sizes, the space for the chair and a quick way to try one in your room.
A standard desk is typically 55 × 27 × 30 in (140 × 69 × 76 cm), with most between 48 and 60 in (122 to 152 cm) wide. The chair needs 24 in (60 cm) behind the desk at the least and about 36 in (91 cm) to be comfortable. Standard desk height is 29 to 30 in (74 to 76 cm).
Desk Sizes
- Width: 48 to 60 in (122 to 152 cm). A compact desk is 36 to 47 in (91 to 119 cm), and a large one for two monitors is 60 to 72 in (152 to 183 cm).
- Depth: 24 to 30 in (61 to 76 cm). 24 in (61 cm) is the least that fits a laptop and a keyboard comfortably.
- Height: 29 to 30 in (74 to 76 cm). The standard, at which most chairs and keyboards are comfortable.
- L-shaped desk: about 60 to 72 in (152 to 183 cm) on each side. It needs a corner of the room.
Space You Need Around It
A desk is only as useful as the chair behind it, so the gap that matters is the one behind the desk.
- Behind the desk, comfortable: 36 in (91 cm). Room to pull the chair out, sit down and get up.
- Behind the desk, tight: 24 in (60 cm). The chair fits, but it hits what is behind it if you push back.
- Walkway past the chair: if people walk behind a seated person, allow 24 to 28 in (60 to 70 cm) on top of the chair.
- Room depth, a 27 in desk against a wall: about 63 in (160 cm) with 36 in (91 cm) behind it.
Where It Fits
A 55 in desk fits under a window, in an alcove or along a wall of a bedroom. If it faces the wall, you sit with your back to the room, so check the door.
A standing desk is the same footprint, but taller, and a drawer pedestal adds width and depth. Add them before you measure.
Where These Sizes Come From
These are typical ranges, not one product. Sizes are not standardised and vary by maker, so check the listing for the exact piece. Top overhangs, handles and trim can add an inch or two.
