Standard Coffee Table Size: Will It Fit Your Room?
The usual coffee table sizes, how far from the sofa and a quick way to try one in your room.
A standard rectangular coffee table is typically 48 × 24 × 18 in (122 × 61 × 46 cm). Keep it 12 to 18 in (30 to 45 cm) from the sofa, and leave 24 to 28 in (60 to 70 cm) clear wherever people walk past it. It should be about two thirds the length of the sofa.
Coffee table Sizes
- Rectangular: 42 to 54 in (107 to 137 cm) long, 20 to 28 in (51 to 71 cm) wide. The most common.
- Round: 32 to 40 in (81 to 102 cm) across. Easier to walk around in a small room.
- Height: 16 to 18 in (41 to 46 cm). At or just below the height of the sofa seat.
- Length: about two thirds of the sofa's width. For an 84 in (213 cm) sofa, about 56 in (142 cm) at the most.
Space You Need Around It
The gap to the sofa is the one most people get wrong, because too far is as annoying as too close.
- To the sofa, comfortable: 18 in (45 cm). Close enough to reach, far enough for your knees.
- To the sofa, tight: 12 in (30 cm). Fine if you rarely sit there.
- Too far: more than about 24 in (60 cm). You have to stand up to put your cup down.
- Walkway around it: 24 to 28 in (60 to 70 cm) on any side people walk.
Where It Fits
A coffee table of about 48 × 24 in suits a 3-seat sofa of 84 in. In a small room, a round table or two small tables are easier to move around than one large one.
A rug under the table and the sofa's front legs makes the whole group read as one. See coffee table spacing and coffee table size for a sofa.
Where These Sizes Come From
These are typical ranges, not one product. Sizes are not standardised and vary by maker, so check the listing for the exact piece. Top overhangs, handles and trim can add an inch or two.
