Console Table Dimensions: Will It Fit Your Room?
The usual console table sizes, the walkway it needs and a quick way to try one in your room.
A console table is typically 48 × 14 × 31 in (122 × 36 × 79 cm), with most 10 to 16 in (25 to 41 cm) deep. Behind a sofa it should be no more than the sofa's length and about as high as the back. In a hallway, keep at least 24 to 28 in (60 to 70 cm) clear to walk past it.
Console table Sizes
- Length: 36 to 60 in (91 to 152 cm). Behind a sofa, match the sofa; in an entry, it can be shorter.
- Depth: 10 to 16 in (25 to 41 cm). Narrow is the point. Over about 16 in (41 cm) it takes space from the walkway.
- Height: 28 to 34 in (71 to 86 cm). Behind a sofa, level with the back of it; in an entry, to suit the lamp or the mirror above.
Space You Need Around It
A console table is narrow, so the number to watch is the walkway it leaves.
- Walkway in front of it: 24 to 28 in (60 to 70 cm) in a hallway. 24 in (60 cm) is the least.
- Behind a sofa: leave a gap of a few inches between the sofa and the table so you can reach the lamp, or push the sofa against it. A tall table behind a sofa can block a window.
- By a door: keep clear of the door's swing, and check where the door opens before you place it.
Where It Fits
A console table works in an entry, a hallway or behind a sofa that floats in the room. In a narrow hall of 36 in (91 cm), a 12 in (30 cm) deep one leaves 24 in (60 cm) to walk.
A console behind a sofa should be a little lower than the back and no longer than the sofa, so it reads as part of it.
Where These Sizes Come From
These are typical ranges, not one product. Sizes are not standardised and vary by maker, so check the listing for the exact piece. Top overhangs, handles and trim can add an inch or two.
