How Much Space Do You Need Behind a Desk?
Enough to roll the chair back, stand up and walk past. Here are the numbers and the room size for a typical desk.
Leave 90 cm (36 in) between the back of the desk and the wall or furniture behind it. That lets you roll the chair back, stand up and let someone walk past. 60 cm (24 in) is the least that works, and the chair will bump the wall when you push back. For a 140 × 69 cm (55 × 27 in) desk against one wall, that makes the room at least 129 cm (51 in) deep, and 159 cm (63 in) to be comfortable.
The Numbers
- Comfortable: 90 cm (36 in) from the desk edge to whatever is behind the chair. The chair rolls back, you stand up, and another person can still pass.
- The least that works: 60 cm (24 in). You can sit down and get up, but you will squeeze past the chair and it will touch the wall.
- Add the depth of the desk. A 69 cm (27 in) desk plus 90 cm (36 in) behind it needs 159 cm (63 in) from the wall it stands against. With 60 cm (24 in) behind, 129 cm (51 in).
- A wide chair needs a little more. Armrests and a wide seat take more room than a plain chair on a stand.
Which Way the Desk Faces
A desk with its back to the room needs the full clearance behind it, because that is the walkway. A desk facing the wall needs less behind you if no one walks there, but you still need the 60 cm (24 in) to get out of the chair.
A desk in a corner or in front of a window has the same rule. Count the radiator, the curtains and the window opening as part of the clearance, since they get in the way of the chair.
Small Rooms
In a small room or a bedroom corner, the usual fix is to turn the desk so the chair rolls into free floor, not into the wall, or to choose a desk 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24 in) deep. A shallow desk gives you back 10 cm (4 in) of room.
A chair with no wheels, or one that tucks under the desk, helps too. Measure the chair pushed back as well as tucked in, because the second number is the one that decides whether the room works.

- Can a desk go against a wall in a small bedroom?
