How Wide Should a Walkway Between Furniture Be?
The width of a path that feels fine, the width that is merely possible, and the places people forget to count.
Aim for 90 cm (36 in) along the main routes through a room, such as door to sofa or door to window. 60 cm (24 in) is the least that lets one person walk through without turning sideways, and it suits short side paths. Where two people pass each other, or someone carries things, leave 105 to 120 cm (42 to 48 in).
The Numbers
- Main routes: 90 cm (36 in). The path from the door into the room and between the main areas.
- Side paths: 60 cm (24 in). Between a sofa and a wall, or round the end of a bed. One person at a time, with no turning.
- Two people passing, or carrying: 105 to 120 cm (42 to 48 in). A hall or a path to the kitchen.
- Less than 60 cm (24 in) is a gap people edge through every day, and they will notice it.
Where Walkways Get Squeezed
A walkway is measured between the nearest edges of the furniture, not between the middles. The usual places it goes wrong are a chair pulled out from a dining table, a door that swings into the path, and the end of a sofa that sticks out further than its arm looks.
Count the open drawer, the open door and the pulled-out chair as furniture, because they are in the way when they are in use.
Walkways and Other Clearances
The space in front of a sofa is a different number: 45 cm (18 in) to the coffee table is comfortable and 60 to 70 cm (24 to 28 in) is a path past it. See coffee table spacing. Dining chairs need 75 cm (30 in) to be pulled out, which is its own page, dining table clearance.
