How High Should a Nightstand Be Compared With Your Mattress?
Nightstand height and bedside table proportions

A nightstand is easiest to use when its surface is close to the height of your mattress.
As a practical starting point, aim for the top of the nightstand to be approximately level with the top of the mattress, or slightly higher or lower depending on the design.
This makes it easier to reach lamps, books, glasses and other items from bed.
Don't Assume Every Bed Is the Same Height
Mattress height varies considerably.
A low platform bed with a thin mattress may sit much lower than a traditional bed with a deep mattress and box spring.
Instead of choosing a nightstand based on a "standard" bed height, measure your actual bed:
Floor → bed frame → mattress → mattress topper
Then compare that measurement with the height of the nightstand.
What About the Bedside Lamp?
Think about the lamp and nightstand together.
The lamp should provide useful light without being so tall that it shines directly into your eyes when you're lying down.
The right lamp height depends on the nightstand, mattress and shade design.
Pro tip
Measure your finished mattress height, including any topper, before buying new nightstands.
