IKEA PAX Wardrobe Dimensions: Will It Fit Your Room?
The PAX frame sizes, the space in front a wardrobe needs and a quick way to try one in your room.
A PAX frame is 39 3/8 in wide, 22 7/8 in deep and 92 7/8 in tall (100 × 58 × 236 cm) in the tall, deep version. It comes in other widths, depths and a lower height. Leave 36 in (90 cm) in front for comfort, 24 in (60 cm) at the least. A deep PAX with 36 in in front needs a room about 58 in (148 cm) deep.
PAX Frame Sizes
PAX is a system: you pick a frame width, a depth and a height, and the sizes add up when you put frames side by side. Doors are sold separately.
- Widths: 19 5/8, 29 1/2 or 39 3/8 in (50, 75 or 100 cm). Two 39 3/8 in frames side by side make 78 5/8 in (200 cm). Two 29 1/2 in (75 cm) frames side by side make 58 7/8 in (150 cm).
- Depths: 13 3/4 in (35 cm) or 22 7/8 in (58 cm). The shallow one suits a narrow room; the deep one takes full-length hanging rails.
- Heights: 79 1/8 in (201 cm) or 92 7/8 in (236 cm). The tall one needs a high ceiling. IKEA lists two-frame sets as 79 1/4 or 93 1/8 in tall.
- Doors: hinged or sliding. A hinged door is about 19 5/8 in (50 cm) wide and swings out that far. Sliding doors need no swing space.
Space You Need in Front of a PAX
Nooked uses the wardrobe gap: 36 in (90 cm) in front is comfortable, and 24 in (60 cm) is the least that works. With hinged doors, the doors have to open inside that gap.
- Deep frame, 22 7/8 in (58 cm): about 58 in (148 cm) of room depth with 36 in (90 cm) in front, or 46 in (118 cm) with 24 in (60 cm).
- Shallow frame, 13 3/4 in (35 cm): about 49 in (125 cm) of room depth with 36 in (90 cm) in front, or 37 in (95 cm) with 24 in (60 cm).
- Hinged doors: a 19 5/8 in (50 cm) door swings out that far, so the door and the gap in front of it overlap. Sliding doors save that space.
- Ceiling for the tall frame: IKEA lists a minimum ceiling height of about 93 1/4 in (237 cm) with hinged doors and 94 1/2 in (240 cm) with sliding doors. For the lower frame it is about 79 1/2 in (202 cm) and 80 3/4 in (205 cm).
Where It Fits
The shallow PAX is the one to try in a narrow bedroom or a hallway. The deep one works along the end wall of a bedroom 10 ft (3 m) or more wide. Wardrobes in front of a bed need room at the foot, so check the gap between the two.
Where These Sizes Come From
