How Far Should a Sofa Be From a Coffee Table?
Comfortable spacing between sofas and coffee tables

The space between your sofa and coffee table needs to balance two things: comfortable legroom and easy reach.
A useful starting point is around 35–45 cm (14–18 in) between the sofa and the table.
This leaves enough room to sit comfortably without pushing the table so far away that drinks, books or the remote become difficult to reach.
Don't Follow the Number Blindly
The ideal distance depends on:
- Sofa depth
- Coffee table height
- Room size
- How the room is used
- Whether people need to walk between the sofa and table
A compact room may require a slightly smaller gap, while a generous living room may allow more.
Keep Walking Routes Clear
The space around your coffee table matters just as much as the gap in front of your sofa.
As a starting point, aim for around 75 cm (30 in) or more for a comfortable main walking route. Actual requirements depend on the room and how heavily the route is used.
Pro tip
Sit on your sofa and reach for the table. Then stand up and walk around it.
If you have to stretch awkwardly to reach the table—or squeeze past it to get through the room—adjust the layout.
