Curtain Measuring 101: How to Measure for the Right Curtains
A simple guide to curtain height, width and length

Getting curtains right comes down to three measurements:
- Where the rod goes
- How wide the curtains need to be
- How long the curtains should be
Get these right and your curtains can make a window feel larger and a room feel taller and more finished.
1. Where Should the Curtain Rod Go?
Curtain rods are often mounted above and wider than the window frame, rather than directly on the window trim.
The exact position depends on your ceiling height, window proportions, trim and the curtain hardware you're using.

2. How Wide Should Curtains Be?
Curtains usually need to be wider than the window so the fabric can form folds when closed.
The amount of extra fabric—known as fullness—depends on the curtain heading, fabric and how you want the finished curtains to look.

3. How Long Should Curtains Be?
Curtains can finish slightly above the floor, just touch it, or extend onto it slightly.
The right choice depends on the look you want, the type of fabric and practical considerations such as cleaning and floor level.
