How Far Above the Window Should You Hang Curtain Rods?
How high and wide to mount your curtain rod

Where you mount your curtain rod can change the proportions of your entire window.
In many rooms, mounting the rod above the window frame and extending it beyond the window on both sides creates a taller, wider-looking window.
There isn't one correct measurement for every room, but these are useful starting points.
How High Should the Rod Be?
A common starting point is around 10–15 cm (4–6 in) above the window frame.
If your ceiling is relatively low, you may choose to mount the rod closer to the ceiling instead, provided the hardware and curtains work with the available space.
The goal is to create a long vertical line from the top of the curtains towards the floor.
How Far Should the Rod Extend?
Extending the rod beyond the window allows the curtains to stack beside the glass when they're open instead of covering part of the window.
Around 20–30 cm (8–12 in) beyond each side of the window can be a useful starting point, but the ideal extension depends on the window, wall space and curtain stack.
If you have limited wall space, you may need a shorter extension.
What About Crown Molding?
Don't automatically mount the rod directly beneath the ceiling.
Instead, consider the position of the molding, the window frame and your curtain hardware together. You need enough space for the brackets and curtain rings or heading.
Don't Forget the Wall
A curtain rod carrying heavy curtains needs adequate support.
Make sure the brackets are secured appropriately for your wall construction and the weight of your curtains.
